And even if they get advanced techs way before others, they won't benefit much from these if they also require resources that the Sophons have not yet established a decent supply for. The only thing that's significant imo is their "open skies" law which allows them to research from one era ahead, but even that is subject to senate support. I think also giving them a fixed +10% science bonus would be more useful than their current traits, though this needs testing to ensure gameplay balance. With all these conditions, it's not surprising that they don't seem to benefit much from their science trait. Their +3 science bonus only works on "cold" planets. Each Sophon pop gives +1 science bonus but they may have to share the same planet with other races if there's a lack of other colonizable planets in the same system at any given time. Their omniscience bonus gets lower the more factions already discover a certain tech. But it's not long before they're well ahead of the rest.I think that's because the Sophon's science trait bonuses are not absolute but conditional on several things. They are science specific, but seem rather limited in that regard at the start. Originally posted by Annonymous:But, I've wondered the same thing about the starting conditions. Like say starting with planet types only colonizable with era 2 techs, or going straight for era 2 module and invasion techs if a rival faction starts too close to your home system for comfort. You likely won't have time to grab more than 3 or 4 era 2 techs before the law is repealed, so you'll need to prioritize which ones to get in the first 20 turns based on your most pressing needs. I usually seize the opportunity during the first 20 turns (when the was it "open skies project" law is still active?) to grab powerful stuff like level 2 attack/defense ship modules, invasion bonuses or era 2 colonization techs. Certain advanced techs require resources to actually build the improvements/modules they unlock, so if you research them too early, you won't be able to benefit from them immediately until you've colonized enough systems with resources to establish decent supply production.Īlthough Sophons are a "peaceful" race, they can't afford to fall behind in military advancements to defend against invasions and attacks. Sophons obviously have a science advantage, but this won't help much unless you also grab systems with strategic resources to allow you to actually build those advanced improvements/ship modules.
